HOD MESSAGE

The importance of English as a global language can hardly be overestimated. It is the language of power and prestige in much of the world and Pakistan is no exception. Hence, it affords the students and scholars of English opportunities to excel within and beyond their fields. The study of Linguistics and Literature not only fosters critical thinking skills but also broadens one’s perspective because the programs in English are not confined to the so-called Standard English, be it British or American English, anymore. The expanse of the subject is such that the students are exposed to Literature in England, the United States, The Caribbean Islands, Africa, South Asia and Latin America. Analysing and evaluating literary texts and developing immaculate reading skills go a long way in realizing the true potential of the students. The same goes true for Linguistics. Instead of being confined to theoretical aspects, the discipline touches on practical areas like Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Semantics and Pragmatics, Language Testing and Assessment and Analyses of the Discourses. Indeed, our students have been conducting research in various areas of Linguistics and Literature. Our MS and PhD programs in Linguistics attract a large number of applicants every year. Furthermore, it is worth noting that our BS English program is also thriving in both regular and self-support modes, exemplifying the academic excellence our institution. Likewise, we consistently enrich the educational experiences of our students through regular workshops, trainings, and seminars, besides creating an environment for them to give a free vent to their creative impulses. More importantly, the Department of English offers at least three courses to every undergraduate program of the University, enabling the students to read, write and speak English not only for academic purposes but also to fulfill their social and professional needs. Recently, the Department has also launched short courses in the English language that cater to the needs of students as well as professionals.
